Identification guide

Which Apple device do I have? Find the model number or identifier.

You usually do not need a serial number to identify a model. A product name, A-number, hardware identifier or chip is often enough to find the right device in ModelGuide.

Start with the information already shown on the device. Then enter one of these values in Search Beta.

Product nameFor example iPhone 15 Pro Max or MacBook Pro.
Model numberUsually an A followed by four digits, such as A3106.

01

iPhone and iPad

Open Settings → General → About. The product name is shown there. At Model Number, iOS or iPadOS may initially show a part number; tap it to reveal the A-number. That A-number is especially useful for identifying the exact regional model.

02

Mac

Choose the Apple menu → About This Mac to see the model name, chip and other basic information. For a technical model identifier, open System Information and look in the hardware overview. ModelGuide can use both the familiar product name and identifiers.

03

Apple Watch

Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone and go to General → About. The model information is listed there. Tapping the model number can reveal the A-number used to distinguish specific versions.

04

AirPods

On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings and select your AirPods, or use Bluetooth and the information button next to them. The model number is shown in the device information. The charging case can have its own model number as well.

What should I enter in ModelGuide?

Use the most specific value you can find. An A-number or hardware identifier is usually more precise than only a family name such as “iPhone” or “MacBook”. Search Beta currently contains a small test database and will grow over time.
